About The Alabama District Foundation
The Alabama Kiwanis Foundation is a non-profit corporation organized by the Alabama District of Kiwanis International. The Foundation is a means through which Kiwanis Clubs of the Alabama District can combine their strength and resources in order to assist individual clubs in carrying out worthwhile projects.
The Foundation assists clubs in undertaking service projects beyond their means by awarding matching grants. Particular consideration is given to requests from small clubs and to requests for projects supportive of the Major Emphasis Program.
Since it's inception, the Foundation has awarded Key Clubs and Circle K Clubs scholarships with matching funds from Kiwanis International; assisted a club in the purchase of a heart monitor for emergency medical services; assisted in the RIF Program; assisted in building playgrounds; most recently assisted the Underwood-Petersville Kiwanis club in building a running track and outdoor classroom for the Underwood Elementary school. Funds provided by the Alabama District to the Alabama Foundation are used to fund publication of the Kourier Newsletter.
The foundation is governed by a Board of Directors, which is composed of eighteen (18) Kiwanian's representing all areas of the District. The board meets twice a year in conjunction with the District Convention and the Mid-Winter conference.
Foundation money comes entirely from donations. Non-designated contributions are invested and the interest is used to fund local projects based on a matching grant basis. Gifts may be in the form of cash, real estate, personal property or testamentary bequests. Gifts tendered must be approved by the Foundation prior to acceptance in order to assure both the donor and the Foundation that it is within the stated purpose and that the Foundation can fulfill the wishes of the donor, as well as comply with existing fiduciary law in such matters.
The Alabama Foundation Board, in 1995, approved a Foundation “Fellow” to honor a Kiwanian of the Alabama District who has provided outstanding leadership and has made significant contributions at both the District and International levels of Kiwanis. The Foundation Board unanimously approved J. Mercer Barnett for this honor and authorized the “Barnett Fellow” for the Alabama Kiwanis Foundation. Mr. Barnett was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, Governor of the Alabama-Florida District and the fourth International President. Becoming a Barnett Fellow requires a donation (by, on behalf of, or in honor of an individual) of $500. The donation may be paid over a two-year period. The Fellow is then given special recognition at the next District meeting and is presented with a prestigious wall plaque, a Foundation Patch to be worn on the left breast pocket of blazer coats, a distinctive Lapel pin, and a Foundation Certificate. Recognition may also be made at special club events, or at Division level events such as the Governor's annual visits.
The Foundation is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization. As such, this means that any donation made to the Foundation is considered a charitable contribution, and the donor is entitled to a tax deduction to the extent permitted by law.
Your entire contribution goes for the stated purpose. Everyone who works for the Foundation does so on a voluntary basis, and no one receives any salary, commission, or any other compensation for their services.
The Bottom Line is ---The Alabama Kiwanis Foundation is a way in which Kiwanian's in the Alabama District can make a donation that: 1) serves the purpose of Kiwanis; 2) stays here to work within Alabama ; and 3) receives a tax deduction as a charitable contribution.
Furthermore, your funds are not merely spent, but rather are endowed so that they may continue to work and grow for the good of Alabama and Kiwanis into the future.
